A Modern Twist on Old-School Hollywood: Learn to Write Film Music in the Style of Your Favorite Composers
Can you remember watching your favorite movies, thinking about how wonderful and complex the music was? Writing orchestral music in the style of great masters like John Williams can be intimidating. Complex arrangements, constantly changing orchestral textures, and fascinating harmonic choices are just a few of the challenges composers face.
Believe it or not, the process can be easier than you think once you understand the basic principles. Master The Score has teamed up with orchestral virtuoso Mattia Chiappa to teach “20th Century Orchestral Writing.” With his flagship music composition course, Mattia has already helped hundreds of students improve their orchestral writing skills.

Your Path to Advanced Orchestral Arrangements: The Course Outline
This course is divided into five step-by-step sections:
1. Variations on a Theme
In this first section, Mattia teaches you how to transform a simple theme (like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”) into a longer piece using interesting variations. You will be introduced to techniques like diatonic variations, modes, non-diatonic variations, modulations, and more, laying the foundation for advanced orchestral writing.
2. Sketching and Orchestrating a Simple Theme
Learn how to create a proper piano sketch that translates well to the full orchestra. Mattia presents his own sketch and then orchestrates it from beginning to end, explaining his thought process. You’ll learn to create interest by changing orchestral textures and instrumentations.
3. Orchestration Techniques
Dive even deeper into orchestration by exploring common techniques every composer should know. Mattia covers doubling in unison and octaves, different kinds of textures (rhythmical, chordal, scalar), and how to incorporate counterpoint to create stunning and complex compositions.
4. Essential Styles of Film Music
In this magical fourth section, Mattia presents blueprints for different styles of music we all love from our favorite movies. He provides full walkthroughs of harmony and orchestration for four different tracks: heroic, romantic, mystery, and family adventure. Complete MIDI files are included for detailed study.
5. Writing a Complex Cue
In this final chapter, Mattia breaks down a complex cue with constantly changing orchestration and advanced harmony. You’ll get a full harmonic walkthrough—a true treasure trove of concepts—and see everything you’ve learned put into action.
